This is Pekelo Sanchez-Manuwa:
Pekelo was 33 years old when police found him sleeping in a stolen Dodge pickup truck on the morning of February 11th, 2017 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Officers banged on the windows and ordered Pekelo out of the vehicle. Pekelo, having just been awoken, reached for the truck keys and was shot and killed by police. He was shot a second time as he attempted to start the engine.
A complaint against Honolulu police was filed on Pekelo's behalf by his mother in 2019. It is alleged that by the time Pekelo was shot for a second time, he was too critically injured to be operating the vehicle with full presence of mind. Police allege they woke both Pekelo and a 19-year-old passenger and shattered open the driver's side window when the men refused to come out. Their report alleges that Pekelo then attempted to flee the scene and ended up ramming the truck into vehicle and town-homes nearby. The lawsuit against police alleged that Pekelo posed no threat to offers prior to being shot. Pekelo's case is one of 8 that were filed against Honolulu Police during this time period. It is unclear what the outcome, if any, of this lawsuit was.
May Pekelo's memory be a blessing and may his family and community receive justice.
Tribal Information: Pekelo is Hawaiian-native.
