Spencer Posey, Killed by Police in Colorado in 2011.

There are no photos publicly available of Spencer Everett Posey.

Spencer was 34 years old when he was shot by  Bureau of Indian Affairs Officer Joseph Keel on May 23rd, 2011 in Towaoc, Colorado. A U.S Attorney review of the case found that the officer used allowable force in shooting Spencer once as he was allegedly yelling that he would kill the officer while charging him with a hatchet. Officer Keel claims that Posey was intoxicated and throwing rocks at police as they tried to subdue him, even making a failed attempt at pepper spraying Spencer. Family has concerns that Spencer was attempting to flee the altercation when he was shot. Community rumor holds that Spencer was running through residential backyards without a shirt on at about 5:00-5:30am that morning, and officers shot him from behind.

Posey had a history of misdemeanor crimes and prior arrests. Family knew him to talk back to authority figures and on a couple of occasions he spoke before Tribal Council to share incidents where police allegedly harassed him. The U.S. Attorney's office decided not to press charges against the involved officer.  Spencer is father to four children. May his memory be a blessing and may his family and community receive justice.
